Fatal Workplace Accident In Chicago Heights

Workplace accidents happen for a variety of reasons.  Some of these reasons include faulty equipment, poorly designed workspaces, defective equipment, poor safety procedures, safety violations, and human error.

There was a fatal work accident Friday morning (January 22, 2016) in Chicago Heights.

The accident happened at approximately 5:30 a.m. at YRC Freight, at 2000 Lincoln Hwy.

Details on the accident and its causes appear somewhat limited.

According to OSHA and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the accident involved a worker, identified as Eric Schneider, 37, of Homer Glen, being hit in the head by an RV panel as he worked in a trailer.

An excerpt from the Chicago Sun-Times article of January 26, 2016, titled “37-year-old fatally struck in head at Chicago Heights shipping company“:

Schneider, who lived in the 13800 block of Hiawatha Court in Homer Glen, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 9:15 p.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of compressional injures from a workplace accident.

Concussions Stemming From Recent Chicago Area Accidents

Concussions and their health impacts has been discussed on this site.  One reason for this focus on concussions – as well as other head injuries such as traumatic brain injuries (TBI) – is the seriousness of their long-term health impact.  While the long-term consequences of such head injuries are not fully understood, many now believe that many different types of head injuries – including those that might seem to be “minor” in nature – can be very detrimental to various aspects of one’s health.

Concussions can happen in many different settings, and for many different reasons.  Recently, concussions have happened in various Chicago area accidents, including car and pedestrian accidents.

One such recent accident, near Grayslake, is summarized in the January 13, 2016 post titled “Crash Involving Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy.”

Another post in which concussions and other head impacts is discussed is the December 14, 2015 post titled “Concussion Injuries In Recent Car Accidents.”

Fatal Illinois Work Accident Involving Tree Trimming

Accidents that happen in the workplace (commonly called work accidents) have many causes.  These causes include faulty equipment, flawed workplace procedures, unsafe work areas, acts of nature, and worker error.

Often, due to the nature of work accidents, the cause of such accidents has to be determined through a thorough investigation.  Such causes – and any negligence – has to be determined for various reasons, including those for filing lawsuits and determining injury compensation.

A recent fatal Illinois work accident happened in Franklin County.

According to various media accounts, the accident involved a man (Todd McWhirter, 48, of Buckner) who fell from an elevated tree trimming bucket.  The accident happened on Wednesday morning (January 13, 2016) in Benton, Illinois.

McWhirter was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital for treatment of his accident injuries.

An excerpt, quoting Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler, from the January 13, 2016 kmov.com article (with video) titled “Franklin Co. man killed in tree trimming accident“:

It is not clear if some sort of medical issue prompted the fall or if this was a work related accident, according to Leffler.

The accident investigation is being conducted by the Franklin County Coroner’s Office and the Benton Police Department.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the kmov.com article mentioned above, as well as the January 13 kfvs12.com article (with video) titled “Franklin Co. man killed in tree trimming accident.”
