At about 8:44 a.m. Thursday, someone working on a construction site at 600 W. Jackson Blvd. in the West Loop accidentally dropped a brick from a roped-off construction area, according to a law enforcement source. The brick, which went tumbling to the street below, struck a parked car, shattering the car’s sunroof.

The woman suffered scratches and bruises from the broken glass, but was not struck by the brick, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman. An ambulance did respond to the scene, but it is not known if the woman was transported to the hospital.

Infrastructure Injuries And Associated Personal Injury Lawsuits

Serious injuries – including those that lead to death – that have occurred due to poorly maintained infrastructure have been featured on this site.  These Illinois infrastructure accidents can take many forms.  Common accidents that have occurred due to unsafe infrastructure has included unsafe sidewalks, uncovered sewers, shelters that have collapsed, and roofs that have deteriorated to the point that materials fall from them.

However, there are many other types of unsafe infrastructure, including unsafe road conditions, including large potholes, as well as sinkholes that form on roads.  The types and severity of unsafe public infrastructure is broad.

One type of accident has involved light posts that have fallen over, causing injuries.  One such accident was discussed in the May 2, 2016 post titled “Girl Hurt By Falling Light Pole In Hyde Park.”

Another accident -and accompanying personal injury lawsuit – involving a fallen power pole in Vandalia is discussed in the June 3, 2016 Madison Record article titled “Woman says utility pole collapsed and caused her injuries.”  An excerpt:

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on June 7, 2015, while she was operating her Ford pickup truck on Veterans Avenue in Vandalia, a power pole collapsed and struck her vehicle, causing her to sustain severe and permanent injuries to her muscles, tendons, ligaments, soft tissues and bones. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because they allegedly failed to maintain their utility poles in a safe and upright position, failed to inspect and replace utility poles and failed to conduct periodic inspection.
