Central A&M seventh-graders Logan Virden, Tucker Long and Will Thompson were injured on Saturday when they lost control of the four-wheeler on which they were riding, Logan’s mother Joni Virden said. She said Logan was most seriously injured because he landed in a 6-foot creek bottom.

Unsafe Infrastructure That May Lead To Accidents And Injuries

Accidents involving unsafe infrastructure have been discussed in many posts on this site.  These accidents have caused a variety of injuries, many of which are serious if not life-threatening in nature.

The types of unsafe infrastructure that can pose a hazard includes unsafe bus shelters, rusting light poles, unsafe buildings, crumbling sidewalks, and large potholes.  However, there are many other types of infrastructure that if poorly maintained can lead to a person being injured.

On January 17, 2018 CBS Chicago ran an investigative segment (article and video) titled “2 Investigators:  Where Light Poles May Fall Next.”  The segment discusses Chicago light poles that are structurally unsafe, largely due to rusting that has impaired their structural integrity.  Many appear to be in danger of falling.

An excerpt from the article:

A teen suffered a broken leg in 2016, and a 13-year-old’s spine was fractured in 2007. Both were walking from school had faulty poles fall on them.

The 2 Investigators obtained 3-1-1 complaints, since 2015, involving fallen or leaning light poles. There were more than 10,000 complaints.

Additional details, including in what City wards had the most complaints, are discussed in the segment.
