There are many types of accidents caused by unsafe infrastructure. Types of unsafe infrastructure include potholes, broken sidewalks, falling light poles, rusting traffic signal poles, and various types of defective structures such as unsafe bus shelters and train shelters.
On this site, injuries that have been caused by such safety hazards are discussed in posts found in the “unsafe infrastructure” category. As seen in these individual accidents, people who have been hurt in these accidents have suffered many types of injuries. Many of these injuries require hospitalization and some require additional medical care such as surgeries and subsequent rehabilitation. Some accidents caused by these safety hazards lead to the death of those who have been injured.
Another form of infrastructure that can pose a hazard is that of missing or dislodged manhole covers. If these manhole covers are missing or somehow “pop out” when run over by a vehicle, a dangerous situation can arise.
The CBS Chicago investigative segment (article with video) of February 27, 2018, titled “Missing manhole covers pose dangers for Chicago drivers” discusses the issue of missing and dislodged manhole covers in Chicago. As seen in the article, there have been many complaints concerning manholes. As seen in the accompanying video, there is potential for someone to be seriously injured, especially in situations where the manhole cover becomes “airborne” and can smash into a vehicle’s windshield. Chicago streets with the highest number of complaints are mentioned.
Additionally, missing manhole covers can pose a risk to other roadway users such as bicyclists, pedestrians, runners, and motorcyclists. Bicyclists and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable as they are traveling at higher speeds – and thus have less time to spot a missing cover – and rely on stability to avoid a loss of control accident.
Additional details and possible updates concerning these infrastructure issues can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
