ATV crashes can cause severe injuries, and in some cases fatal injuries. On this site, various safety issues regarding ATVs (also referred to as “three-wheelers” and “four-wheelers”) have been discussed in posts found under the “ATV Accidents” category. Also found in that category is summaries of Illinois ATV crashes that have caused injuries and/or death.
There are many reasons as to why riding an ATV can be dangerous. These vehicles are often powerful and quick, and are often ridden on rough terrain. As well, there can be uncertain driving dynamics that occur when ATVs are ridden on pavement. As discussed in the June 29, 2018 post (“Statistics And Commentary Regarding Fatal ATV Accidents“) roughly 2/3 of all fatal accidents involving off-road vehicles happen when these vehicles are ridden on a roadway.
There was an all-terrain vehicle crash near Zion Sunday (December 8, 2019) afternoon. This accident happened in the 9700 block of 17th Street in Unincorporated Zion. The rider of the vehicle was critically injured, with injuries including head injuries.
An excerpt regarding the accident, from the Lake & McHenry County Scanner article of December 8, 2019 titled “Man in critical condition after ATV rollover in unincorporated Zion“:
The 56-year-old Zion man, who was the only one involved in the crash, was traveling westbound when his ATV left the roadway to the north for an unknown reason and struck an embankment, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.
The ATV rolled over several times and the man suffered serious head injuries after being ejected from it, Covelli said. Paramedics found the man unconscious and not breathing at the scene.
The man was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of his accident injuries. He was in critical condition.
This ATV crash is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
Additional details concerning ATV accidents and the unincorporated Zion accident can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
