Concussion Injuries In Recent Car Accidents

Concussions and other types of blows to the head are always of concern.  As discussed in this site’s Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury pages, such injuries should be immediately assessed by a qualified medical professional.  This is because – in short – in many cases the adverse health impact may take a while to become fully apparent.

As well, the issue of the long-term impact of concussions, while not fully understood, is being actively investigated as many believe that damage from repeated concussions can be very detrimental to various aspects of health.

One way in which concussions happen are during car and other vehicle accidents.  A recent pedestrian accident in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood resulted in two of the three pedestrians struck by a car having concussions among their accident injuries.  This accident is summarized in the December 12, 2015  post titled “Wicker Park Pedestrian Accident.”

Another car accident in which a head injury occurred is seen in a December 9, 2015 car crash in Ringwood, Illinois.  That accident is summarized in the December 9 post titled “Single-Car Crash In Ringwood.”

Fatal Illinois “Chain Reaction” Crash

There was a fatal Illinois vehicle accident Sunday morning (July 5, 2015) in Randolph County.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP) the accident happened at approximately 8:50 a.m. on Illinois 154 at Riverview Road.

The accident was a “chain reaction” crash, in which the first accident involved a car that crashed into a utility pole.  The utility pole’s lines fell onto the roadway, and an eastbound Ford Edge struck the power lines.  The Ford Edge lost control and rolled over onto its side, and it went into the westbound lanes, where it was struck by an oncoming semi truck.

Because of this impact, the Ford Edge was then pushed back into the eastbound lane, where it was struck by a Kia.

The driver of the Ford Edge, identified by the Randolph County Coroner as Barbara E. Wedemeyer, 59, of Baldwin, was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The drivers of the Peterbilt semi and Kia were not injured during the accident.

An excerpt from thesouthern.com article of July 5, 2015, titled “One killed in Randolph County crashes“:

Lia Shurn Davis, the driver of the vehicle that struck the utility pole, suffered non-incapacitating injuries and was charged with driving with no valid driver’s license and improper lane usage. Brandon Scott Smith, 23, of Marion, was a passenger in Davis’ vehicle and suffered minor injuries.
