Girl Hurt By Falling Light Pole In Hyde Park

Due to aging, usage, and other issues, many cities have unsafe public infrastructure.  This is a cause for concern, especially if such infrastructure’s condition has degraded to the point where it can cause injuries and/or fatalities.  On this site, various posts concerning unsafe sidewalks and other hazardous infrastructure that has caused injuries can be seen in the Slip & Fall category and elsewhere.

In the November 18, 2015 post, the issue of rusting light poles in Chicago was discussed in the post titled “Hazards Caused By Aging Chicago Infrastructure.”  This post highlighted a CBS Chicago segment that discussed various safety issues presented by rusting and dangerous light poles, and mentions of a girl who was allegedly injured by a falling light pole.

On May 2, 2016, there was an accident in which a light pole fell on three students in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood.  According to Chicago Police, the accident happened at approximately 11:05 a.m., near 52nd Street and Lake Park Avenue.

An excerpt from the article of May 2, 2016, titled “Light Pole Falls On Teen In Hyde Park And Breaks Her Leg“:

Around 11 a.m., a police sergeant was standing near a group of students in the 5200 block of Lake Park Avenue — a block away from Kenwood Academy High School — when a pole fell and hit them, according to Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago Police spokesman.

The sergeant enlisted a group of bystanders to help pull the pole off of them, Quaid said.

According to Chicago Police, a 16-year-old girl was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.  Her injuries included two compound fractures in her leg.

Two other girls were also taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for a medical exam, although they did not appear to have suffered any visible or otherwise apparent injuries.

Additional details regarding this light pole accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the article mentioned above, as well as the May 2 Chicago Tribune article (with video) titled “Three girls hit by falling light pole in Hyde Park.”
