Two People Suffer Head Injuries During Car-Motorcycle Head-On Collision

As discussed frequently on this site, concussions and other traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can have many short- and long-term health consequences, and in many cases such head injuries can lead to serious impairments and sometimes death.

Due to the various dynamics of motorcycle crashes – especially those that involved “head-on” collisions – serious head injuries often occur.

A fatal car-motorcycle crash occurred on Saturday night (November 5, 2016) outside of Valparaiso, in which both the motorcyclist and motorcycle passenger were hurt and their injuries included head trauma.

An excerpt from the Chicago Sun-Times article of November 6, 2016, titled “Woman charged with DUI for fatal motorcycle crash in Valparaiso“:

Nanette Howard, 55, was a passenger on the 1990 maroon Harley Sportster motorcycle about 7:50 p.m., traveling west on U.S. Highway 6 approaching County Road 550 East in Valparaiso, when the bike was struck head-on by a 2005 blue Chevrolet Cobalt, according to a statement from the Porter County sheriff’s office.

Police said the Cobalt pulled out in front of the motorcycle while turning onto eastbound Highway 6 from southbound County Road 550 East.

Howard was flown to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment of her accident injuries, which included head injuries and leg injuries.  She died later that night.

The motorcyclist was identified as Donald McCarthy, 68, of Chesterton.  He also suffered head injuries as well as foot injuries.  He was taken to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary for treatment of his accident injuries.

Neither McCarthy or Howard were wearing motorcycle helmets at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Chevrolet Cobalt was identified as Rachel Dover, 24.

Two excerpts from the November 7 nwitimes. com article titled “Police seek more charges after woman in crash dies“:

Rachel Dover, of Clarksville, Tennessee, was arrested after the crash about 7:50 p.m. Saturday on two counts of felony operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and two misdemeanor OWI counts.

also:

Dover also was cited the night of the crash for failure to yield the right of way and refusal to submit to a chemical test, police said.

Additional details regarding this fatal motorcycle accident can be seen in the Chicago Sun-Times and nwitimes.com articles mentioned above, as well as the November 7 CBS Chicago article titled “Woman Charged With DUI For Fatal Motorcycle Crash In Valparaiso.”
