Infrastructure That Is Structurally Unsafe Can Cause Injury

Accidents that are caused by defective and/or structurally unsafe infrastructure have been discussed in many posts on this site.  As seen in many of these accidents, injuries can be substantial if not life-threatening in nature.  Some of the types of infrastructure that have caused injuries in Chicago and the broader Chicago area include bus shelters, light poles, potholes in roads, broken pavement on sidewalks, and unsafe sewers.  However, there are many other types of infrastructure that can cause injury if it is somehow deficient, either through faulty design or if it is not properly maintained.

Bus shelters that are unsafe have been highlighted due to the collapse of a bus shelter at O’Hare that caused substantial injuries (including paralysis) to a woman.  That accident, in which the City of Chicago settled a lawsuit for $148 million, was most recently discussed in the August 24, 2017 post titled “Jury Award Concerning O’Hare Shelter Collapse That Paralyzed Woman.”

On December 7, 2017 CBS Chicago ran another investigative video segment (“More Unstable Bus Shelters Across Chicago“) regarding the issue of bus shelters that are structurally unsafe.  Among the problems that were discussed were rusted bolts, rusted supports, corrided and broken clamps, and unsecured glass.

Additional details concerning this defective infrastructure issue and the risks caused can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
